Imphal, April 25 2024:
Expressing deep concern over the dilapidated condition of Oinam Government High School, Federal Students' Organisation, Kangleipak (FESOK) has urged the state government to address the inadequacies for promoting quality of education in the state.
In a release, FESOK said that pitiable condition of the school came to light during a survey conducted by its members under Education & Library secretary Y Sumanta recently.
When approached, school's headmistress in-charge disagreed with the notion that priority should be given to only government schools with high enrolment while emphasising that authorities concerned should initiate prompt measures to repair school infrastructure and ensure appointment of necessary teachers and multi-tasking staff to improve functionality.
The release informed that the school established in 1985 had produced notable individuals in the past.
However, of late, the school has been facing challenges due to delay in releasing grants and maintenance funds by the government.
Moreover, absence of a permanent headmaster has led to the female teacher entrusted the charge as acting headmistress.
Moreover, for a total of 86 students, including many from children homes and relief camps, from primary level to class X there are only 14 teachers, with majority of the 19 class rooms left unutilised as the teachers were found conducting classes in computer rooms and library, FESOK maintained, while contending that substandard infrastructure had been laid bare by the storm on Wednesday which blew away school's rooftop.
FESOK also highlighted that the School Management Committee (SMC) is yet to be constituted, and timetable unstructured, consequently affecting proper education of the students.
In 2023, only 11 students appeared for High School Leaving Certificate Examination, and 13 in 2024.During the inspection visit and subsequent meeting with the headmistress in-charge, it also came to light that despite representations submitted to the ZEO and the Directorate of Education (S) for repairing the dilapidated infrastructures of the school, no response has been received till date, FESOK said while appealing to the government authority to address the shortcomings to realise the goal of quality education.
