State tops in substance abuse chart

As Manipur is grappling with a multifacet ed humanitarian crisis, a disturbing report on sub stance abuse laid bare an alarming situation in the state, which has a total population of 28.56 lakh, as per the Census 2011 report.
According to the 'Magnitude of Substance Use in India 2019' report of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Manipur ranks significantly high in various categories of substance abuse.
The report, which encompassed individuals aged 10 to 75 years, revealed deeply concerning figures.
According to the report, a staggering 22.4 per cent of the population in Manipur reported engaging in alcohol consumption, making the state the 8th highest in the country for this statistic.
In terms of Ganja Use Prevalence, approximately 2.8 per cent of the population are re ported of using ganja, figuring at the 10th position nationwide.
The usage of opioids, including opium and heroin, stood at 4 per cent, positioning the state as the 5th highest state in the country.
The consumption of sedatives, such as Diazepam and sleeping pills, was reported among 1.43 per cent of the population, making the state the 3rd highest in the nation.
Shockingly, 0.65 per cent of the population in the age group of 10-17 years were found to be using inhalants like Dendrite and nail polish remover, classifying the state as the 8th highest in the country.
