Magisterial probe ordered into mom-child death case

Imphal, October 27 2024:
After coming to an understanding between the government and the JAC formed in connection with the suspicious death of mother-daughter duo Bashanti and Lanchenbi at their Haoreibi Mayai Leikai house, the JAC claimed their bodies from RIMS morgue and performed the last rites on Sunday at Haoreibi Makha Leikai.
Subsequent to the understanding, Imphal West district magistrate has been appointed as enquiry authority of the magisterial probe into the incident.
On September 23, the bodies of Bashanti and Lanchenbi were found in a suspicious manner on their bed with the post-mortem conducted the next day and report of the same furnished to the police on October 18 and the JAC on October 19.Examinations by RIMS Forensic Medicine Department and Forensic Science Laboratory, Pangei, confirmed traces of Benzodiazepines, generally used in treatment of anxiety and insomnia, in bodies of the deceased duo.
Based on the post mortem report, the JAC demanded prosecution of those responsible for alleged abetment of suicide of the two.
On October 23, JAC members led by its convenor Oinam Chaoba met Manipur chief minister N Biren along with Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam and came to an understanding on conducting magisterial enquiry and to gift the land of the deceased to the public as public memorial.
Acting on the understanding, the government on October 23 issued an order appointing Imphal West district magistrate as enquiry authority of the magisterial enquiry to ascertain the facts and circumstances leading to the fatal incident, investigate the compelling facts and circumstances leading to the incident and suggest remedial measures to avoid the recurrence of such incidents in future.
The order further directed to submit the enquiry report to the government within 30 days from the date of issue of the order.
Subsequently, bodies of the mother and the daughter were claimed for conduct of their last rites.
A release issued by JAC convenor Oinam Chaoba Leima urged the government to translate into action its demand for developing up a memorial complex on the homestead land of the deceased mother and daughter.
