Man convicted for rape on false promise of marriage

Imphal, April 25 2024:
The Court of additional sessions judge (Fast Track Court) Crimes Against Women, on Thursday, convicted one Chongtham Dhurbajit Singh on charges of raping a girl on the false promise of marrying her.
The case is based on a complaint lodged by the victim identity not disclosed) alleging that Dhurbajit had intimate relation with her since May 2013, on false promise of marriage.
Furthermore, the victim asserted that the accused compelled her to undergo abortions twice.
After promising to elope her on a certain date, the accused did not turned up, after which the complainant went to the accused person's house only to find that he already had eloped another woman.
Moreover, the accused person threatened to kill her or release videos recorded by him of their intimacy.
Upon receipt of the complaint, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, took cognizance of the matter and forwarded it for trial to the Sessions Judge, Imphal West, recognising the severity of the allegations.
Subsequently, the case was transferred to the court of Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crimes Against Women, Manipur, for expeditious adjudication.
On December 31, 2020, the Additional Sessions Judge (FTC) for CAW framed charges against Chongtham Dhurbajit under sections 376 and 417 of the Indian Penal Code.
Despite pleading "not guilty" during the trial proceedings, the accused underwent examination of eight witnesses as part of the prosecution s case.
After thorough examination of evidences and legal arguments, the court delivered its verdict, holding the accused guilty of the charges levelled against him on Thursday.
The sentence hearing is scheduled for May 10, 2024 .
