Imphal, July 07 2025:
Tension gripped Manipur University on Monday after students staged a protest against alleged body search of female students by male teachers during an examination on July 4 .
The incident has sparked outrage, with students demanding action, and threatening to boycott further exams.
According to some students, the incident occurred on July 4 during the BEd second semester examination of the Teacher Education Department of the university.
A student who appeared in the exam told reporters that a flying squad comprising three faculty members, two male teachers from the MCA department and one female teacher from the Life Sciences department, entered the examination hall and began conducting body searches on students unannounced.
The student alleged that the two male teachers searched both male and female students, including checking inner and outer pockets of clothing, despite the presence of female teachers.
Some female students were subjected to repeated searches, which the students have described as physical assault, molestation, and mental harassment.
In response, the students through Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) submitted a formal complaint to the dean of students' welfare, signed by 17 female students.
The students demanded that the two male teachers be terminated from service or placed under suspension for minimum of two years and warned of boycotting the remaining examinations if no action is taken.
As part of the protest, students boycotted the second paper examination scheduled on Monday and gathered in front of the vice-chancellor's office.
Tensions escalated during the demonstration when the vice-chancellor's escort commander allegedly made a derogatory remark towards the protesting students.
The situation was brought under control after university faculty intervened and the escort commander apologised.
Dean of Students' Welfare Prof Ch Ibohal told reporters that the complaint had been forwarded to the Students' Grievances and Redressal Committee, as the matter exceeded the jurisdiction of his office.
Acknowledging that the complaint, submitted through MUSU, was signed by 17 female students, he expressed confidence that the committee would record statements from the complainants and take swift action.
Prof Ibohal assured that any official found guilty would face appropriate penalties.
He urged students to remain calm while the enquiry is underway and expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved in a fair and timely manner.
