Lup, Committee offer tributes to Khongjom War martyrs

Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup on Thursday paid floral tributes to Paona Brajabashi and other martyrs who laid down their lives in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 in a tribute event programme held at Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Thoubal district.
According to the Lup convener RK Sanatombi, the solemn programme was marked by paying of floral tributes at the Martyrs' Memorial and statue of Paona Brajabashi at Kheba Ching and offering of 'Tarpon' at Khongjom river flowing besides the memorial complex.
The Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 which was fought 133 years ago has been recorded in history as the last independence war of Manipur.
The first battle of the War took place at Thoubal Athokpam in which 20 unknown martyrs including Sanakhya Yaiskullakpa and Macha Ibungo Sengoisana sacrificed their lives, conveyed the Lup convener.
To face the incoming British Army from Tamu, Manipur Army led by Sanakhya Lokendra and Birjit Wangkheirakpa along with Senapati Angousana, Dolairoi Hanjaba Zillangamba, Phunganai Sanglakpa Chinglensana, Yenkhaiba Rudra Major General, Chongthamia Major, Paona Brajabashi, Top Major, Major Wangkhei Meiraba, Haobamcha Angangcha Major, Heirangkhongja Major, Hijam Leiphon Poila, Huirem Leirikkhomba, Ningthoujam Ningthouba Kut, Salam Sundar (Sala Sundar), Laishraba Tabungba and Ningthoujam Khongjamba were sent towards Pallel, recalled RK Sanatombi.
She continued that Major Wangkhei Meiraba along with 20 others laid down their lives in the battle at Kakching Manao Hill on April 23, 1891, while in the last battle of Anglo-Manipuri War at Khongjom on April 25, 1981, Paona Brajabashi along with others made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland.
Hence, as the descendants of our brave forefathers the function was organised to honour their sacrifice on April 25, 1891, she added.
Meanwhile, Khongjom Battle Memorial Committee, Manipur on Thursday organised 30th observance of tribute to the martyrs of Khongjom War of 25 April, 1891, at Tenggol Lampak, Khongjom.
A statement by Khongjom Battle Memorial Committee, Manipur stated that during the observance the attendees paid floral tribute to Chongthamia and many undocumented martyrs.
It also commended the Archaeological Department for proper maintenance of the Tenggol Lampak.
