World No Tobacco Day observed in many districts

Tbl/CCpur/Kpi, May 31 2018: In line with the observance of the World No Tobacco Day across the globe, District Health Society Thoubal under the National Health Mission on Thursday observed the day at the conference hall of the National Health Mission, CMO complex, Thoubal.

Haobam Rosita, Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal, who is also the Chairperson of the District Health Society Thoubal, District Mission Director and CMO Thoubal Dr N Jayentakumar Singh and SDPO Thoubal Amrita Sinha attended the observance 'World No Tobacco Day: Tobacco and Geart Disease' as presidium members.

Encouraging healthy eating and lifestyle, H Rosita called for a stop to the use of tobacco and tobacco products which are identified as major causes for many kinds of health hazards including cancer.

Consuming tobacco and its products not only affect the economic condition of the family, but also affect the health of the individuals consuming tobaccos, she said.

Mass awareness and consciousness about the harmful effects of tobaccos are sustainable solutions that will save the people and the society, she said.

Explaining the importance of the day, District Nodal Officer of NTCP District Health Society Dr Kh Trusty said that tobacco and its products are cause of many diseases and medical conditions including hypertension, heart attack and cancer etc.

Sensitizing the people about the various adverse effects tobacco has on people will help curb tobacco menace in the society and will help the society become a tobacco free society, he said.

In the same line, Lions Club of Thoubal Greater Centurian with IMA and Community Medicine Department RIMS, Imphal organised a similar observance at Waikhom Mani Girls' College Thoubal on Thursday.

Senior Resident doctor of the Department of Community Medicine RIMS Imphal S Gautum along with four other doctors sensitised the students of the college about the effects of consuming tobacco and its products using slide-shows.

Bishnunaha Youth Federation (BYFY) with 26 AR C-Coy Company too observed the day at Bishnunaha Community Hall.

26 AR C-Coy Company Commander Sooraj and BYFY president Oinam Gouradas attended the event as presidium members.

Resource persons at the observance pointed out the different negative impacts tobacco has on the health of the people.
CHURACHANDPUR: The World No Tobacco Day was also observed at DTC Hall Churachandpur with the District Health Society Churachandpur and Pherzawl jointly co-hosting the event.

As a part of the observance, a free oral health check up camp was also at the venue.

Deputy Commissioner of Pherzawl Mannuamching, CEO ADC Churachandpur T Kammuanlal Simte, SP Churachandpur Rakesh Balwal, along with the CMO of Churachandpur and Pherzawl Dr Kimngaihching Simte and Dr Liankhozam Guite graced the event attended by several DLOs.

Delivering keynote address, Dr Chingnunsiam DNO Churachandpur presented a detail exposition on GATS II 2016-17 for Manipur.

When compared with the national figure, tobacco users in the State stood at 55.1 percent as against the national figure of 28.6 percent.

And in all cases men out-do women as tobacco user for smoke, smokeless or both.

Tobacco is more prevalent in rural areas than in urban areas though the disparity appears minimal, said the District Nodal Officer.

The data presented by the DNO also indicated that tobacco use is most prevalent between the age group of 25-44 years of age.
KANGPOKPI: District Health Society, Kangpokpi District also observed the day at Community Health Centre meeting hall, Kangpokpi DHQs.

The event was graced by Hmangte Lerte Kom, Additional DC Kangpokpi as chief guest while Dr Ph Henkhoneng Mate, CMO/Director Health Society, Kangpokpi and Dr J Touthang, DIO Kangpokpi attended as president and guest of honour respectively.

The speakers at the function highlighted risks associated with tobacco use, and advocated for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

Dr Paotinlal Haokip, Medical Officer in-charge, District Hospital Kangpokpi said the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics claimed that the global tobacco epidemic kills more than seven million people each year, of which close to 900,000 are nonsmokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke.
