Imphal, August 28 2010:
It will be difficult to protect the political and economic identities of the state unless civil organisations and NGOs are work sincerely with the true spirit of welfare of the people, said Prof N Joykumar of Manipur University addressing a gathering on the occasion of the 12th foundation day of United People's Front (UPF).
Speaking as chief guest at the function held at Manipur Press Club, the professor further observed that if the present work culture of the civil organizations is not rectified, there would be a downfall in the morale of the people and this will lead to a socio economic instability and will hurt the political and economic identities of the state.
The economy of a state cannot remain dependant on others.
While getting support from others, it must also make efforts to establish a firm economic foundation enable it to stand on its own.
To achieve this end, civil organisations and NGOs have a great role to play, he observed.
The habit of bifurcation among the civil societies needs to be stopped.
Unless and until, the habit of bifurcation is dropped and a culture of amalgamation be adopted, it will be difficult to bring economic independence for the state, the professor went on to observe.
Speaking on the occasion, former president of UPF, Y Devadutta explored the need of adopting the culture of high idealistic thinking to suit with the times.
It is not right for civil societies to emerge only when there is some sort of a peoples' uprising.
As a civil society, it must have a future vision for the people.
Otherwise, there is no meaning of being a civil society.
While giving the key note address of the foundation day, UPF general secretary, Bikramjit said that even after the country got independence around six decades back, people of the North Eastern region are yet to enjoy most of the rights enshrined in the Constitution.
People in his region are living like a dying man, he observed and called for a concerted effort to build a common platform of the people of the region to work for upliftment of the society, he added.
