Imphal, August 21 2026:
The Bishnunaha Youth Federation Yairipok (BYFY) has urged the Chief Medical Officer, Thoubal District, to immediately post a Gynaecologist and a Medicine Specialist at the Community Health Centre, Yairipok, citing acute shortage that is affecting thousands of people.
In a complaint submitted on Friday, BYFY pointed out that despite being one of the major CHCs in Thoubal district, Yairipok CHC is functioning without an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist as well as a General Medicine physician.
Because of this, pregnant women, elderly patients and those suffering from chronic and critical illnesses are being forced to travel to district hospitals or Imphal for treatment.
The travel not only adds to the financial burden of families but also puts patients at risk dining medical emergencies.
The complaint further stated that the problem is not limited to Yairipok.
It noted that Manipur has 16 Community Health Centres, 6 District Hospitals and 1 Sub-Divisional Hospital, yet the State reportedly has fewer than 20 Gynaecologists serving in the entire Government health system.
This shortage, it said, makes it extremely difficult to provide adequate maternal and reproductive healthcare, especially in rural areas.
It was also mentioned that every CHC is expected to provide essential specialist services in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and General Medicine.
The continued absence of these doctors at CHC Yairipok has deprived the local population of quality healthcare and defeated the very purpose for which Community Health Centres were set up.
The BYFY has requested the CMO to take up the matter immediately with the Directorate of Health Services and the Government of Manipur, and to ensure that a qualified Gynaecologist and a Medicine Specialist are posted at CHC Yairipok without delay.
The BYFY also urged the authorities to address the overall shortage of specialist doctors in the State and to ensure that rural health institutions are adequately staffed so that people can access quality medical care without unnecessary referrals.
