Govt regulates use of siren

The state government has ordered that all sirens fitted in ambulances and by any other agencies in their vehicles should not be similar with those used by police and law enforcing agencies in terms of type and sound.
In an order issued Wednesday, commissioner (Home) T Ranjit Singh said use of sirens with similar sounds by ambulance and police & law enforcing agencies is creating confusion and panicky situation amongst the public.
As such, the government has ordered for differentiation in the sound of sirens of ambulance and other agencies from that law enforcing agencies in view of the sensitive nature of use of the same sirens by different authorities and in order to avoid any kind of likely misunderstanding among the public, it added.
The order also directed the Transport Department to issue necessary orders in this regard.
The order has been issued keeping in view the prevailing law and order situation in the state and for its effective maintenance, the commissioner stated.
Mention may be made that subsequent to outbreak of the ethnic violence since May 3 last and reports of intermittent firing between the warring communities, the police and other authorities have imposed various restrictions and surveillance including random checking of vehicles as part of maintaining law and order situation.
The police have set up 700 checkpoints in different districts across the state, both in the hills and the valley, and the police and other security forces have been checking all types of vehicles round-the-clock to prevent crimes and illegal carrying of arms, explosives, harmful materials and other contraband.
