Imphal, August 21 2026:
Manipur's rich cultural heritage took centre stage at the Miss Universe India 2026 event in Jaipur on Wednesday, with the State costume drawing attention for its celebration of tradition, craftsmanship and community diversity.
Designed by renowned Manipuri designer Robert Naorem, the ensemble was inspired by Manipur's distinction as the birthplace of modem polo, known locally as sagol kangjei.
The costume pays tribute to the sport's journey from the sacred fields of Manipur to its recognition as a global symbol of excellence, strategy and grace.
The design incorporates traditional tribal motifs, handcrafted textiles and distinctive sarong-inspired drapes.
Elements of Tangkhul and Kabui textiles have also been woven in to reflect the cultural diversity and shared heritage of the State's communities.
Speaking about the creation, Robert Naorem said the costume was conceptualised to present Manipur as a whole on a national platform while celebrating its craftsmanship and heritage.
He described it as a representation of the coexistence of the State's many communities.
Thadoi Yumnam is representing Manipur at the ongoing Miss Universe India 2026 pageant in Jaipur.
Robert Naorem, who is also the State director of Miss Universe India and holds the licence for the State-level pageant, said the platform combines beauty with advocacy and inner confidence.
India has produced three Miss Universe winners - Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta and Hamaaz Sandhu.
All three have earlier visited Manipur and walked for Naorem's creations, further placing Manipuri fashion on the national and international pageant map.
