KHU Seminar urges policy action on indigenous knowledge for climate resilience

Imphal, May 31 2026:
The three-day National Seminar on "Environmental Sustainability and Traditional Knowledge Systems in North-East India: Practices, Challenges and Prospects" concluded successfully at Khongnangthaba University, Imphal.
Organised by the university's Eco-Chapter and Science Club in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur, the seminar was held from May 28 to 30, 2026 .
In the valedictory session, Prof M Shyamkesho Singh, Department of Botany, presented the welcome address and highlighted key outcomes.
The presidium comprised Prof Naorem Joykumar Singh, Vice Chancellor, KHU; Prof RK Gambhir Singh, Department of Zoology, KHU; and Prof N Surjitkumar, Head.

Prof Joykumar said the seminar was unique for linking environmental sustainability with traditional knowledge through a multidisciplinary lens, stressing that indigenous wisdom is a living resource for climate resilience and sustainable development.
The presidium urged that findings and recommendations be compiled and submitted to the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change for policy follow-up.
They also recommended publishing the presented papers as an edited volume or proceedings.
Themes covered included climate change, biodiversity conservation, sacred groves, indigenous ecological wisdom, sustainable agriculture, traditional healthcare, natural resource management, mother tongue sustainability, gender participation, ICT, handloom, handicrafts, and sustainable livelihoods.
