Imphal, August 16 2011: As celebrated throughout the country, the 65th Independence Day was celebrated at Manipur Rifles parade Ground yesterday where Chief Minister O Ibobi hoisted the tri colour flag of India.

Amidst heavy rainfall and general strike called by UGs of the state Chief Minister O Ibobi hoisted the tri colour flag of India and received salute to the march past contingents.

On the occasion 26 personnel were awarded Police Medals besides conferring Bravery awards to 2 children.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister O Ibobi said that considering the administrative convenience the demand made by SHDDC is legitimate.

But insisting on to declare Sadar Hills as a full fledged in a specific period by blocking NHs and causing inconvenience to the general public is not the right approach.

This type of agitation is never practiced anywhere else in the country.

Demand for a full fledged district of Sadar Hills, Jiribam and others has been an age long protest.

Why the previous governments have not conceded to their demands for so long needs to be discussed, he added.

He further said that ADCs has been set up in Sadar Hills and flagship programmes are taken up.

There have been no instances where it has been reported that flagship programmes could not be taken up as a result of the undeclaration of Sadar Hills as a full fledged district.

Likewise ADCs has also been set up in Jiri.

The agitators should not block NHs as a means to fulfill their demands.

We should all come together and try to solve all problems.

The state government is trying its level best to mend and keep the NHs at tip top condition.

The central government has been specifically proposed from the state government's side for the purpose and the central government has assured to convert NH 53 into a double lane by 2013.There have also been improvements in airways and railways also, he said.

Additional SP, IE Kamei Angam Romansana was the Parade Commander in the ID celebration.

The function was attended by Ministers, MLAs and top officials of Police and other departments.

In connection with the I Day celebration the imprisonment period of 8 prisoners were reduced one month each.

On the occasion 21 Police personnel were awarded gallantry awards, 1 police officer was awarded for Distinguished Service and 4 police officer were awarded for meritorious service.
