Imphal, January 07 2025:
It is necessary to submit updated reports on the volatile situation in Manipur to the United Nations as both the State and Central Government have neglected the pertinent issues of the State, said Thongam Ajit, president, National Research Centre (NRC) .
The NRC president made the statement while speaking at a discussion session held today at Naorem Sanajaoba Public Library hall, NRC Building, Canchipur on the topic "Manipur and Geo-politics" .
The violence which erupted on May 3, 2023 was previously considered an internal issue of the State, but after observing the evolution of the crisis, many experts and intellectuals have categorized it as a geo-political issue, he said.
The State has been impacted by geo-political threats as a result of the conflicts prevailing in the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar, added the NRC president.
In view of such a complex situation, Thongam Ajit underscored the need to consider the conflict from a global perspective and advocated for regular submission of updated reports on the situation in the State to the United Nations.
A compilation of such memoranda will serve as a historic record for posterity, he shared.
On the occasion, Laishram Malem Mangal, Assistant Professor of International Law, Symbiosis Law School, Symbiosis International (Deemed) University, Pune spoke on "Geo-politics and International Law locating Manipur" while Ch Gunamani, Assistant Professor, Centre for South East Asian Studies, Nagaland University delivered a lecture on "Manipur in the global geopolitics".
Phulindro Konsam, chairman, Committee on Human Rights (COHR) was also present.
