Imphal, November 16 2024:
The state government has imposed an indefinite curfew and ordered a temporary suspension of internet services across multiple districts following escalating tensions and fresh protests.
The move comes in response to public outrage over the recent killing of abducted civilians, whose bodies were found in Jiribam, at the hands of Kuki militants.
According to an order issued by the chief secretary, internet and mobile data services, including VSATs, broadband (ILL & FTTH), and VPN services, have been suspended in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.
The suspension, which began at Saturday 5:15 pm, will last for two days.
However, exemptions have been made for government offices and other cases where specific permissions are granted by the state government.
The indefinite curfew is enforced in all the valley districts due to the deteriorating law and order situation to curb unrest and prevent further violence.
District magistrates from Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching issued separate orders announcing the imposition of the curfew on Saturday.
The curfew orders stated that essential service providers, including those in health, electricity, public distribution, water supply, petrol pumps, municipal services, and media, as well as courts and airport-related activities, would be exempted.
Additionally, contractors and workers holding valid Airport Entry Permit (AEP) cards will be allowed to move during the curfew.
