Negative impact of human activities on environment noted

Manipur is dealing with the impacts of climate change due to human-driven activities leading to degradation of the environment, said Tourangbam Brajakumar, Director, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change.
He made the remark while kicking off a 5-day photo contest cum exhibition organised by the Manipur Amateur Photo Club (MAPC) in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change at Imphal Arts Gallery, Kwakeithel today.
The photo contest cum exhibition was organised as a part of World Environment Day 2024 and is set to conclude on June 18 .
Speaking as the chief guest, Tourangbam Brajakumar addressed the emergence of many environmental activists from the State and maintained that this is due to awareness about the worsening state of the environment and the need to protect it.

The Director also spoke about recent weather events which caused widespread suffering such as the severe hailstorm and devastating floods while terming them as impacts of climate change.
Stating that people are engaged in management of solid wastes by cleaning rivers, collection of plastic bottles etc, he also bemoaned the practise of dumping garbage in rivers, ponds and wetlands.
Meanwhile, MAPC president Pradip Phanjoubam stressed on the role of human beings in saving the environment and encouraged people to plant more trees.
The top three winners of the photo contest are Khagembam Alebason Meitei from Iroishemba Mayai Leikai, Sanasam Okendro Singh from Thoubal Sabaltongba Mayai Leikai and Yumkhaibam Stephen Luwang from Uripok Polem Leikai who bagged the first (Rs 15,000), second (Rs 10,000) and third (Rs 7,000) prizes respectively.
