Imphal, April 25 2010:
Vice president of the Manipur unit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Chungsei Haokip (60) was shot dead by an identified miscreant inside a hotel at New Checkon under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East district around 7 pm today.
Another person Haokai Lungpheng (50) sustained bullet injury in his right calf, and has been admitted to JN Hospital, Prompat.
Chungsei Haokip had contested the last Manipur Assembly election as a candidate of RJD in Tengnoupal Assembly Constituency.
However, he was defeated.
At present, he was the vice president of NCP, Manipur State Unit.
Reports from the spot said that Chungsei Haokip was dining together with Haokai Lungpheng at a hotel located at New Checkon around 7 this evening when an unidentified youth allegedly came inside the hotel, and shot Chungsei Haokip from behind.
Two bullets hit the back of the victim and exited through his chest, the reports said.
Haokai Lungpheng sustained a bullet injury in his right calf.
He is said to be the chief of Govajang village under Saikhul Sub-Division.
He is at present staying at New Checkon.
The two injured men were immediately rushed to JN Hospital, Porompat, just about half a kilometer east of the spot.
Chungsei Haokip breathed his last on the way to hospital.
Haokai Lungpheng is being treated at the hospital.
The hotel, where the incident took place, belongs to one Keisham Dashurani Devi (40), wife of K Chandra.
A team of Porompat Police Station immediately rushed to the area and swung into action to launch a search operation for the assailants.
However, no report of arrest of any person in connection with the incident has been received so far.
Police have registered a case and started investigation into the incident.
It is not yet known, who or which armed militant group committed the crime.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
