Imphal, April 25 2010:
Unidentified gunmen shot dead the vice-president of the State unit of the Samata Party, Chingsei Haokip, at a hotel located at New Checkon in Imphal East district today at about 6.45 pm.
According to police, the Samata leader was shot dead while he was having some snacks inside the hotel, Lakshmi Hotel, along with a friend, who happens to be a village chief.
Chungsei who was shot twice in the abdomen was immediately rushed to JNIMS, but was declared brought dead by the doctors.
His companion, Haokhei Lupheng, village chief of Gobajang in Saikul sub-division also received a bullet wound on the right ankle.
He is currently undergoing treatment at JNIMS.
60 year old Chungsei Haokip was a resident of Tuikon village in Chandel district but was staying in a rented room near New Checkon at the time of his death.
Haokip contested the last election as an RJD candidate from Tengnoupal Constituency.
Porompat police have registered a case and started investigating it.
State unit NCP president Radhabinod Koijam has strongly condemned the killing of Haokip.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Koijam said that the murder is highly inhuman.
If there were any differences or conflict of ideas, then it should have been sorted out through talks, he added.
He demanded punishment of the killers.
