MORE THAN 1000 Bangladeshis were apprehended from various parts of Meghalaya by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) volunteers in the past few months, according to KSU general secretary Hamlet Dohling.

There are three infiltration check gates in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, one is the Byrnihat infiltration gate in Ri Bhoi district while the infiltration gates in Umkiang and Looksi are located in Jaintia Hills.
The KSU leadership which felt the continuous entry of suspected Bangladeshis into the state as a danger to the demographic profile of the state recorded, "With 1000 odd suspected Bangladeshis being detected by us alone, it is imperative for the police department to strengthen the gates".
The police, meanwhile has assured that man power in these infiltration check gates will be strengthened for a round the clock vigilance, said Hamlet Dohling While police claims that at least 30 suspected Bangladeshis are pushed back everyday from Byrnihat and Umkiang, the KSU will not stop its local units from carrying out their own operations against suspected Bangladeshis.
