Imphal, May 26 2025:
Every citizen should uphold the spirit of nationalism and prioritise the country's interests, said National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur, Board of Governors chairman Bajrang Lal Bagra during the launch of the institute's 'Nation First' campaign at its Langol campus on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Bagra highlighted that India, despite its long history of prosperity, suffered setbacks due to lack of nationalism and unity among its people.
"It is a misconception that development in India began with the entry of Western powers," he said, pointing out that centuries of colonial rule, on the contrary, hindered the country's progress.

Until the 17th century, India accounted for nearly 36 per cent of the global economy, making it one of the wealthiest nations.
"But, by the 18th century, as colonial rule took hold, the economy shrank to 24 per cent and continued to decline," he explained.
Bagra further noted that by the time India gained independence in 1947, the country's contribution to the global economy had dropped below 1 per cent.
He attributed this decline to lack of unity and nationalism, stressing the importance of reviving these values under the spirit of "nation first" .
Shija Hospitals and Research Institute managing director Dr Palin Khundongbam and NIT Manipur director in-charge Prof Kh Manglem Singh also attended the programme.
