Many stage sit-ins condemning Sahir's death; demands justice

Imphal, October 24 2023: Numerous sit-in protests were staged in various localities protesting the death of Sangomshumpham Sahir alias Sana from Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai due to mob violence on October 22 .

The JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Sangomshumpham Sahir @ Sana organised sit-in protests at Top Khongnang Makhong Kshetri Awang Leikai Bazar Board, Kshetri Mayai Leikai, Kshetri Bengoon, Hatta, Lilong, Khurai, Sora, Kwakta etc.

At Top Khongnang Makhong Kshetri Awang Leikai Bazar Board, the protestors held many placards with messages such as "We oppose Sahir's death", "We condemn mob justice", "Arrest the culprits", "Handover Sahir's case to NIA/CBI" among others.

Speaking by the sideline of the protest, one Bibi from Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai asserted that Sahir was an innocent daily wage earner who was beaten up by a mob at Takhel on October 19 and subsequently succumbed to his injuries on October 22 .

Stating that the locals of Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai and the Meitei Pangal community at large condemn the circumstances leading to his death, she added that the State Government has remained mum instead of rounding up the perpetrators.

Thus, she called for a reputable investigating agency such as the CBI or the NIA to handle Sahir's case and bring justice.

Haji Najimuddin, spokesperson of the JAC complained that the Lamlai Police Station has not yet registered a suo-moto case in connection with Sahir's death and further questioned the locals of Takhel under Imphal East district who have not taken up any action against the culprits.

Hence he demanded termination of the police officers who have allegedly failed to perform their duty and cautioned that the JAC in association with local clubs and student bodies will launch intense agitation until justice is delivered.
