Three held for spraying herbicide on paddy crop

Three people allegedly involved in spraying of herbicide and destroying the paddy crop grown at Khumbram Loukol under Moirang assembly constituency, which belong to one Ahongshangbam Tonsana of Tronglaobi Makha Leikai, were rounded up by members of Village Volunteer Force (WF), Moirang on Tuesday and handed them over to the local meira paibi activists who then handed them over to Moirang Police.
The accused trio has been identified as Irengbam Bimol alias Babu (65) of Tronglaobi Makha Phairembam Leirak; Huidrom Heramani Singh (35), son of (late) H Ahongjao Singh of Terakhongsangbi Mamang Leikai; and Laiphrakpam Muhin Singh (53), son of (late) L Chaoba of Khudekpi Mamang.
On questioning, the accused persons revealed that Heramani and Muhin were hired by I Bimol at Rs 500 each for spraying herbicide on the standing crop of A Tonsana.
The herbicide and the sprayer pumps were provided by Bimol after which Heramani and Muhin despite initial reluctance sprayed the herbicide on the paddy field under the influence of intoxication and due to greed for money.
Speaking to media persons, VVF, Moirang volunteer Moirangthem Somorjit, who played a key role in rounding up the three alleged culprits, stated that they started investigating after report of damage caused to paddy crop at Khudekpi Leimaram Mamang went viral.
Their investigation led to apprehension of Heramani and Muhin who then disclosed about instigation by Bimol.
It may be mentioned that two-three days back, A Tonsana found his crops damaged when inspected his paddy held at Khudekpi Leimaram Mamang.
