Cultural Varsity to be set up soon: CM

Imphal, October 24 2015 : To preserve and promote culture and traditions of different communities in Manipur, a Bill was passed in the State Assembly to set up a Cultural University and the Governor has already granted his assent, said Chief Minister O Ibobi during the function of "Mera Meepham" held at Manipur Film Development Society Auditorium.

Attending the function organised by Umang Lai Kanba Apunba Lup (UKAL) as Chief Guest, the Chief Minister said that various communities in Manipur have been living together since time immemorial and Lai-Haraoba has been playing key role in strengthening brotherhood and cementing bond between the communities.

Indian Constitution has given each and every citizen of India the right to choose their own religion but everyone should respect each other, said Ibobi.

While pointing out that difference could be conclusively settled, the Chief Minister said the Cultural University aims at preserving and promoting indigenous cultures and traditions.

He informed that the Governor will give his assent soon and the process of appointing the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the University is already on.

Attending the function as Guest of Honour, Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister AK Mirabai lauded UKAL for its effort to save indigenous cultures and traditions which were dying with the passage of time.

Explaining the difference between the erstwhile Lai Haoraoba and today's, the minister appealed UKAL to make efforts so that the Lai Haoraoba could be showcased to the world.

Art and Culture Secretary K Radhakumar on the occasion stressed on the importance of archiving rare and rich ancient documents prepared by "our forefathers" .

Delivering his speech, Chairman of Mera Meepham Organising Committee Ng Kangjiya Mangang pointed out that a comprehensive understanding of the Lai-Haraoba is important if anyone wanted to familiarize with the knowledge of the evolution of the universe.

A book titled "Lai Haraobagi Kanglon: Ahumsuba Saruk" was also released by the Chief Minister during the function.

Ibobi also handed over awards to distinguished Amaiba-Amaibis (Priests & Priestesses), Pena Aseiba (Pena Maestros) and Lai Committees for the year.

Pensions were distributed to two aged persons for their roles in preserving the Umang Lai Haraoba.

PDA Chairman T Mangibabu and Parliamentary Secretary K Meghachandra also attended the function.
