IGNOU confers degrees to over 3.24 lakh learners at 39th Convocation

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) hosted its 39th Convocation Ceremony on April 7, celebrating the academic achievements of over 3.24 lakh graduating students across various disciplines, including certificates, diplomas, undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD degrees.
The main ceremony took place in New Delhi and was graced by Vice President of India, C P Radhakrishnan, who delivered the convocation address as the chief guest.
Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, was the guest of honour.
Simultaneously, the convocation was held at 51 Regional Centres and 5 Overseas Centres.

The Regional Centre in Guwahati hosted its own ceremony at NEDFI House, Dispur, where Dr Shyamal Prasad Saikia, Chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, served as the guest of honour and delivered the convocation address.
A total of 15,212 students from the North East Region were awarded degrees, diplomas, and certificates, with 6,637 students from Assam alone eligible to receive their qualifications.
Of these, 4,560 were from the Guwahati Regional Centre.
A total of 161 students physically received their degrees from the guest of honour, while the remaining were conferred in absentia.
In his address, Dr Saikia lauded IGNOU's role in providing accessible and flexible education for those who cannot attend regular classes due to various constraints like jobs, distance, or financial problems.
He shared his personal experience as a former IGNOU student and advised graduates that while a degree is a beginning, proper knowledge in the changing world requires continuous involvement in innovative ideas using available ICT technologies.
Dr Md Baniyamuddin, Regional Director, highlighted IGNOU's significant contribution to spreading higher education through a network of oyer 2,000 study centres and more than 260 academic programmes.
He emphasized the university's motto of "education for all" and its role in taking education to the doorstep of learners, irrespective of age, region, religion, or gender.
The Guwahati regional centre currently offers 169 programmes across twenty-nine study centres in eighteen districts of Assam.
The event also included the felicitation of 11 former coordinators/programme in-charge of study centres and 4 staff members of the Regional Centre for their dedicated service in open and distance mode education.
Dr Abhimanyu Datta, Assistant Regional Director, proposed the vote of thanks.
The occasion saw the presence of regional centre officials, staff, invited guests, and other dignitaries.
