World No Tobacco Day observed across Imphal with call to curb youth addiction

Imphal, May 31 2026:
Marking World No Tobacco Day under the theme "Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction", several organisations held awareness programmes across Imphal, stressing the urgent need to curb rising tobacco use among youth.
The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Regional Office Imphal.
Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, organised a Special Outreach Programme at Gem Public School, Pourabi.
Field Publicity Officer Dr N Reena outlined CBC's role in disseminating government schemes and administered a pledge to students, teachers, and locals to abstain from tobacco.

Resource person Dr Haobijam Angomcha Singh, Sr Psychiatrist (retired), Directorate of Health Services, detailed the harmful impacts of tobacco and said peer pressure and social factors are pulling teenagers into addiction.
He termed Manipur's ranking as the second highest tobacco-consuming State "alarming" and urged stronger enforcement and awareness.
Principal W Jaminjoy Meitei lauded the grassroots initiative.
A spot-quiz and a skit by Private Registered Troupes highlighting tobacco's dangers were also staged.
Separately, the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) observed the day at its head office in Pureiromba Khongnang Makhong, Konung Mamang.
CADA president Hijam Priyokumar presided, with Dr Kshetrimayum Kala as chief guest and former UCM president Sunil Karam as guest of honour.
Secretary general T Geetchandra, in his keynote, called tobacco a "gateway" to other substances and noted the Global Adult Tobacco Survey placing Manipur third nationwide.
Dr Kala urged protecting children aged 13-15 from industry targeting and appealed to CSOs, clubs, and meira paibis to unite against tobacco.
The Indian Dental Association, Manipur State Branch, also observed the day at UNACCO School, Khongman.
Honorary secretary Dr Bidyabati Huyam gave the keynote on tobacco threats.
Dr Nandita Kshetrimayum, Associate Professor, Dental College RIMS, spoke on tobacco addiction awareness, while IDA MSB president Dr Sinam Subhaschandra Singh stressed oral health.
The programme urged students to prioritise health and make responsible choices.
