Unidentified people snatched three firearms from house guards deployed at the Sagolband Bijoygovinda residence of former medical director K Rajo in the wee hours on Sunday.
However, the said arms were recovered during an operation carried out later in the day.
According to a police source, some unidentified people clad in camouflage (Khaki) dress overpowered the house guards deployed at the residence of former medical director at about 2am on Sunday.
The armed unidentified intruders snatched three guns issued to the house guards and left the place immediately.
The snatched guns include one AK-47, one INSAS rifle and one carbine.
Top officials of Imphal West district police and OC of Imphal PS rushed to Rajo's house after getting report of the weapon snatching and recorded statements of the house guards.
The source further said that six personnel of Imphal West district police were deployed as house guards at Rajo's residence after he received threat and three each personnel guarded the house on rotation.
The snatching of weapons comes at a time when the central security forces and Manipur police have been recovering a large number of arms and ammunition from various parts of the state.
In a recent operation, the security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from near the Dolaithabi dam area.
The team recovered 16 arms including one carbine, one Sten gun, four grenades, 70 ammunition, 16 explosives, and other war-like stores.
Manipur police said that more than 1,000 weapons have been stolen from hill areas and around 2,000-3,000 from valley areas during the past 3-4 months.
They are worried that the arms have fallen into the hands of civilians, but they are confident that they will be able to recover them all.
