State celebrates International Day of Forests

Forest Department celebrated the International Day of Forests 2025 at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, here, on Friday.
The celebration, centred on the theme "Celebrating Forests and Foods," underscored the indispensable role of forests in sustaining ecosystems, ensuring food security, and fostering community well-being.
The event witnessed the presence of Anurag Bajpai, principal chief conservator Forests & Head of Forest Force (HoFF) and additional chief secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industries and Tribal Affairs & Hills), Arun Kumar Sinha, principal secretary (Forest, Environment & Climate Change), and Soreiphy Vashum, additional principal chief conservator Forests (Administration & Planning) .

The celebration commenced with the ceremonial watering of the Heirangoi plant, symbolising the collective commitment towards environmental conservation and sustainable forest management.
In his welcome address, RK Amarjit Singh, conservator of Forests (Central Circle) and special secretary (Forests, Environment & Climate Change), emphasised the vital role of local communities and JFMC members in forest conservation.
The event also featured an exhibition showcasing forest-based products and sustainable initiatives, with participation from districts across Manipur.
Members of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs) exhibited their products, highlighting the economic potential of forest resources.
Delivering the keynote address, Anurag Bajpai stressed the significance of forests in preserving biodiversity and enhancing food systems.
He underscored the vast natural resources forests provide and emphasised the responsibility of citizens to contribute to conservation efforts.
Arun Kumar Sinha, in his address, highlighted the urgent environmental challenges posed by climate change and rising temperatures.
He also discussed the economic potential of VDVK products, advocating for market expansion strategies to promote forest-based industries.
A short film on Van Dhan Vikas Kendras was screened, illustrating how forest-based food products have contributed to the economic uplift of local communities.
The documentary offered valuable insights into the sustainable harvesting and processing of forest resources.
The event featured two insightful technical sessions.
The first, "Food Security through Forests," was presented by Romabai Waikhom, DFO Bishnupur.
The second, "Employment Opportunities in Forests," was delivered by Debala Leiphrakpam, conservator of forests (Eastern Circle) and chairperson, FDA (Kamjong/Tengnoupal/Chandel).
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Vikram Suresh Nadhe, DFO (Central Forest Division), who thanked all participants, including government officials, local communities, JFMC and VDVK members, academicians, and environmental organisations.
