Imphal, June 22 2023:
The Assam Rifles has refuted the claim that 29 women were hurt in their action at Lilong on June 20 .
A statement signed by the Officiating PRO of IGAR (South) Lieutenant Colonel Raghuvendra Singh claimed that four individuals were apprehended by one Mobile Vehicle Check Post with weapons and they confessed to be cadres of a proscribed outfit.
It also claimed a FIR was also lodged at Lilong police station in connection with the arrest.
Further claiming that about 250 people gathered in front of Lilong police station to torch the police station and free the cadres of the proscribed group, it alleged that the police asked for help from COB to save the police station.
In the course of the events, the police fired tear gas shells and smoke grenades to disperse the crowd and pushed them out of the station, the Assam Rifles claimed and added that some people might have got injured in the process.
Terming the entire event as AR crackdown is factually incorrect, it added.
