Two persons were apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday for allegedly stealing construction materials from an abandoned Meetei houses in Moreh, adding to growing concerns among internally displaced Meetei residents over the continued looting and desecration of their properties.
According to official sources, a team of 66 Battalion BSF, currently stationed at BSF Adhoc M&C XIII near Eastern Shine School, Moreh, heard suspicious activity in a nearby building.
Upon investigation, the picket commander found two men dismantling CGI roofing sheets from an abandoned house.
The suspects were detained and later handed over to Moreh police station.
The accused have been identified as Khaiminlen Lupho (36) of Mumpi village, and Boipu Gangte (40) of Lhangkichoi, both from Tengnoupal district.
A regular case has been registered at Moreh PS invoking sections 305, 329, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
They are charged with theft in sensitive locations, including dwelling houses, means of transport, and places of worship; criminal trespass and house-trespass; and joint criminal liability when two or more individuals act in furtherance of a common intention to commit a criminal act.
The incident has once again highlighted the insecurity surrounding the abandoned homes and religious sites of displaced Meetei residents, who fled Moreh following the outbreak of violence on March 3, 2023.These families, now scattered at various relief camps in the valley districts, have repeatedly raised alarms over theft and vandalism, particularly targeting sacred spaces such as Nongpok Ningthou Nongpok Panthoibi Shanglen and Meetei Shanglen.
Displaced residents say the latest incident underscores the urgent need for stronger police presence and regular patrolling in Moreh.
They called on the state government to protect their properties until they can return home safely.
