"Unity among different communities will bring desired results.
If we are divided, our identity, culture and tradition will be vanished sooner or later," said Revenue Minister Karam Shyam.
He was speaking at South East Asia Cultural Organisation's "4th observation day of cultural revivalist" organised at Lamyanba Sanglen, Palace Compound Imphal today.
Ex-MLA Patsoi AC & vice-president NEIDP Sapam Keba Singh, president SEACO Head Office Kolomcha Achoubi Khuman, Chief Editor Kanglapao Pukhrambam Ibochou, advisor SEACO Akham Langol, president Editors' Guild & Editor Sangai Express (Manipuri Edition) Khogendra Khomdram, social activist Meitram Lokendro and advisor SEACO Longjam Sanathoi attended the function as presidium members.
Lauding the efforts of the SEACO in preserving and promoting culture, chief guest of the event, Karam Shyam said that one has to embrace his/her culture dear and promote them.
"Collective efforts are needed to protect and promote our identity and culture.
Safeguarding our culture is a must in order to survive and promote our identity.
No matter how small a community/race may be, if united and collective efforts are made its identity can be preserved and promoted.
If there is no unity, no community/race can survive," he said.
Saying that there seems to be no or little unity when it comes to safeguarding own culture, he urged all to ponder the reason and work towards common goals.
He underscored the importance of passing on the rich aged culture/tradition and religion to the youth.
"Youth should be educated about the importance and significance of the indigenous culture and tradition.
They should be taught and encouraged to embrace the rich aged culture our forefathers have entrusted us with," he said.
He lauded SEACO's efforts in promoting Sanamahi religion and recalled the wrath of the then Kings of Manipur who punished and banished those who embraces Sanamahi religion.
"Now we have democracy, where one can pursue and adopt any religion he/she likes.
We have freedom of religion, what we need now is unity to strengthen and grow the State," he said.
President and Editor of Sangai Express (Manipuri edition) Khogendra Khomdram lauded the efforts of SEACO and called for united efforts to promote indigenous culture and identity.
"Reviving and promoting the aged culture and tradition are right things to do.
We should play our parts towards this end and support SEACO's ambition in reviving, preserving and promoting aged/lost cultures in the region," he said.
President SEACO Kolomcha Achoubi Khuman said that the observance was organised to commemorate the forefathers who defied Kings and preserved the Sanamahi religion.
He remembered Naoriya Phulo who pioneered the revival of Sanamahi religion after years of suppression by the then Kings of Manipur.
He urged all to trace back their origins and embrace the culture once that had been theirs.
Floral tributes were paid to the photos of forefathers/elders who were outcasted by the Kings and Brahmasabha of those days for adopting Sanamahi religion.
