Protest against murder of two students continues
JAC wants all culprits arrested

Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, October 01 2023: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the brutal killing of Phijam Hemanjit and Hijam Linthoingambi by Kuki militants has warned the State Government that delay in booking the murderers and delivering justice will invite more agitation.

Speaking by the sidelines of a protest meet organised by local clubs and Meira Paibis of Takyel Kolom Leikai held today, convenor of the JAC Laikhuram Kanta said that the State Government has not yet reached out to the JAC on the status of the probe regarding the students who went missing on July 6 and are now assumed death after their photos went viral recently.

The JAC has started doubting whether the State Government is tracing the students who were missing for nearly two months.

From the viral photos, it can be learnt that the students have been killed mercilessly but the culprits still remain at large, he said.

The JAC had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking arrest of the culprits within 48 hours but the latter is yet to respond.

The more the State Government takes time the more violent the agitations will be, he warned.

Kanta also condemned the use of brute force by State and Central security forces against students who rose in agitation following the emergence of photos of post and prior to the cold-blooded murder of Hemanjit and Linthoingambi on social media platforms.

He also extended solidarity to the students and shared pain with those who were injured during the security force's action.

He went on to point out that the present ethnic crisis and the merciless killing of the students are all the handiwork of Kuki narco-terrorists.

What is more saddening is the inability of the Chief Minister to take any action against the narco-terrorists despite knowing their hands in unbearable crimes, he said.

As the State continues to languish due to prolonged crisis, the JAC is all set to join hands with all sections of the society in movement against the prolongation in solving the prevailing crisis and in delivering justice for the students, he said.

He also sought support from all quarters in staging democratic forms of agitation.

Placards inscribed with slogans- "Punish Kuki militants involved in killing Hemanjit and Linthoingambi", "No to Division in State Administration", "Implement NRC", "We Want Justice", "We condemn police brutality", during the protest meet.

Mass protest against the brutal murder of two students continued today with Meira Paibis and teachers holding demonstrations across districts.

Around 2,000 teachers of schools and colleges (Government/Aided and private) organised a sit-in protest at Tera Lukram Leirak Community Hall.

It may be mentioned that the two students, Hijam Linthoingambi (17) and Phijam Hemanjit (20) had gone missing on July 6, and photographs showing them alive in captivity of armed Kuki men and their dead bodies lying on the ground surfaced on September 25 triggering widespread protests.

During the protest demonstration today, the teachers marched towards the residence of Hijam Linthoingambi at Tera Tongbram Leikai and later they paid floral tributes to the photographs of the two students at the Tera Lukram Leirak community hall.

The teachers shared the grief and pain of the bereaved families and prayed for their souls to rest in peace in heavenly abode.

The teachers appealed to the Government to arrest all culprits involved in their murder and deliver justice.

Protest demonstration were also held at Singjamei Wangma Pebiya Pandit Leikai, Monkhanglambi, Khongnangpheidekpi, Khongman, Langthabal, Urup, Arapti, Canchipur, Waikhom Leikai, Sabungkhok, Nongada Makha Leikai, Chana, Langjing Achouba Makha Leikai, Patsoi -III, Patsoi-IV, Salam Maning Leikai and Malom Tuliyaima.

In another demonstration yesterday, students of Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya, Yaralpat campus, Imphal East prayed for justice for Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit.

The students paid floral tributes to the photographs of Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit.

CBI has arrested four persons and detained two minors in connection with the murder.
