An angry mob lynched a man in retaliation for hacking to death his own wife at a Thoubal district village under Kakching police station, today.
According to police report, the husband namely Okram Biren (35) s/o (L) Mangi dragged in his 30-year old wife (Babita) inside their Langathel Mamang Leikai home and hit her on the left temple with a sharp weapon at around 7.30 am.
While the wife bled to death instantly, an agitated mob comprising of the locals as well as from the nearby maternal home of Babita gathered on the spot and assaulted Biren.
Biren died at around 8.30 am probably from excessive bleeding, the police said.
A police team recovered an axe and a blood-stained machete, likely to have been used in killing Babita, from the spot of crime.
Moreover, a large stone and bamboo were also seized by the police as they are suspected to be used in bludgeoning Biren to death.
The victims left behind two sons of 6 and 4 years, and a two month old baby girl.
Locals informed that Biren was a timber trader and his mental state unstable.
Recounting an earlier incident, they revealed that Biren's first wife along with three daughters had been living in her maternal home after the husband tried to strangulate her with murderous intent.
The locals also said that while Biren was out of home an individual had come to his residence earlier in the morning telling Babita to informed her husband to clear the debt.
They claimed to have heard Babita conveying the information that sparked a heated argument between them.
Soon after Biren dragged in Babita into the house and killed her, the locals maintained adding that all three children were outside when the incident took place.
As news about the incident spread, a large number of people arrived there and found Biren still holding the axe and threatening to swing at anybody who try to advance further.
However, the mob overpowered Biren and thrashed him severely.
Both the bodies have been brought to RIMS morgue here, by a team of Kakching police station.
