Students sensitised on conservation of Sangai at Kumbi

Kumbi, September 15 2025:
A one-day Students' Sensitisation Programme on conservation of Sangais was held today at the Conference Hall of Sanatombi Oriental English School, Kumbi.
The event, organised by the Sangai First Foundation (SFF), Manipur aimed to raise awareness among students about the urgent need to conserve the Sangai deer, the State animal of Manipur.
The programme was graced by SFF Manipur Managing Trustee Dr Khangembam Shamungou; and Trustees Kumam Jugeshor; Tongbram Budhi; and Elangbam Premjit, National Youth Awardee; and Sanatombi Oriental English School founder Nongmaithem Santakumar as presidium members.
Inaugurating the event, N Santakumar expressed his delight at being able to host such a significant programme, emphasising its role in motivating students to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Sangai deer.
Trustee K Jugeshor Singh, speaking on the agenda of the event, underlined the importance of spreading conservation awareness among young minds.
Citing census data, he highlighted the endangered status of the species, whose survival is tied solely to the Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park.
Dr Shamungou elaborated on the historical, ecological, and cultural importance of the Sangai, calling it "our heritage and our pride".
He also detailed the threats faced by the species due to hydrological fluctuations caused by unscientific operation of the Ithai Barrage, stressing the need for urgent measures to mitigate habitat loss.
Elangbam Premjit appealed to the youth to actively engage in conservation efforts, urging them to make their passion for wildlife and biodiversity long-lasting.
As part of the programme, Dr Shamungou donated 14 books authored by him on the environment and conservation of Sangai to the school library.
A lively spot quiz competition was also organised, drawing enthusiastic participation from 203 students and teachers.
The winners will be felicitated on Sangai Day, to be held on December 10, 2025 .
The programme concluded with a collective pledge to protect the Sangai and safeguard the environment.
