Imphal, June 08 2025:
The All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU) today observed the 134th Saheed Diwas at the AMGSU office in Kanglatongbi, in solemn remembrance of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chettri, the first Gorkha martyr in India's freedom movement.
The day marks his martyrdom on June 8, 1891, when he was executed by the British colonial Government for his involvement in the Anglo-Manipuri War.
Subedar Niranjan Singh who was bom in a strong military background is a man of discipline, courage and conviction service.
During the political turmoil in Manipur in the late 19th century, Niranjan Singh aligned himself with the nationalist cause, offering military support to Yubraj (Crown Prince) Tikendrajit Singh, one of the central figures of resistance against British intrusion.
His military leadership, loyalty and defiance against the British Empire marked him as a key figure in the resistance.
He was captured by the British and court-martialed for waging war against the Crown.
He was sentenced to death and was hanged on June 8, 1891 at the Western Gate of Kangla Fort in Imphal.
Though often overshadowed in mainstream Indian history, Subedar Niranjan Chettri remains a revered hero among the Gorkha community, remembered for his bravery, loyalty and sacrifice.
Today's observance at the AMGSU office in Kanglatongbi included floral tributes, candle lighting, and a minute silence to honour the martyr's sacrifice.
The event was attended by LB Adhikari, president of AMGSU, and members of the Union.
Speaking at the event, Adhikari emphasized the need to recognize and preserve the stories of unsung heroes like Niranjan Singh Chettri, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country's sovereignty.
He said that "Sudedar Chettri's life is a shining example of courage and patriotism and is the duty of us to ensure that future generations remembered his name and his contributions.
