Bishnupur, January 11 2025:
Loktak Development Authority (LDA) Chairman M Asnikumar Singh led a team of surveyors from the Public Works Department (PWD ) and a consultant team on a field visit to Thanga today.
The visit marked the beginning of review work for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed expansion and upgradation of the Moirang-Thanga Road and the bridge over Loktak Lake connecting Mukap, Mandha, and Chingthi, said a press release.
Once implemented, the project will provide direct connectivity to Bishnupur, Imphal West, Kakching and Thoubal districts while integrating Thanga with key national highways, including Tiddim Road (NH-2), Mayai Lambi (NH-137/A), and National Highway 102 (IndoMyanmar National Highway/Asian Highway) .
Speaking about the initiative, M Asnikumar emphasised the significance of the project in enhancing road connectivity in the Thanga constituency of Bishnupur district.
He explained how the infrastructure development would serve as a cornerstone for regional integration, economic growth, and sustainable development.
The project will upgrade critical approach roads linking Moirang and Keibul Lamjao to Thanga, improve the Moirangkhunou-Keibul Lamjao stretch, and develop road infrastructure around Thanga Hillock with provisions for retaining walls, drainage systems, culverts, and safety barriers.
Additionally, a new road will connect Thanga Salam Mandha (Pukhrambam Ching) to Chingthi, including the construction of bridges over Loktak Lake to link Mandha with Mukap and Chingthi, further extending to Sekmaijin in Imphal West, said the LDA Chairman.
He stressed that this project is not solely about infrastructural development but also addresses the revival of historical trade routes and cultural connections.
The proposed Thanga Salam Mandha-Chingthi route holds significant historical importance, as it once served as a vital trade and cultural pathway linking Thanga with Kakching, Wabagai, Sekmaijin, Mayang Imphal, and beyond.
Restoring this route will reconnect communities, strengthen cultural heritage, and reignite economic activities in the region, he maintained.
The enhanced connectivity will also support planned tourism initiatives for Thanga hillocks and heritage sites, alongside the upgradation of the Regional Water Sports Complex at Takmu.
The LDA Chairman further remarked that this initiative aligns with India's Act East Policy, transforming it into a tangible reality by fostering seamless regional and international integration.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Minister for Public Works, Govindas Konthoujam for their invaluable support and proactive efforts.
Lastly, he appealed to the people of Thanga for their support and cooperation for this transformative project.
