World No Tobacco Day observed

As observed across the globe, World No Tobacco Day 2025 was observed today at at Banting Hall, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal under the global theme, "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products".
As per a release issued by RIMS, the event organised by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Dental College, RIMS, aimed to raise awareness about the deceptive practices of the tobacco industry and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in combating tobacco addiction through education, policy advocacy, and healthcare interventions.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal; Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, Imphal; and Prof B Praveen Reddy, Principal, Dental College, RIMS, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasized the significance of the theme "Unmasking the Appeal", highlighting the need to expose the tobacco industry's deceptive tactics.
He noted that tobacco use is responsible for over one million deaths annually in India and contributes significantly to cancer and oral health problems, particularly through the use of smokeless tobacco.
He commended the efforts of RIMS Dental College, especially its Tobacco Cessation Centre, in leading public health initiatives and urged students to take an active role in the fight against tobacco use.
As part of the observance, a symposium titled, "Breaking the Habit: A Multidisciplinary Dental Approach to Tobacco Cessation & Oral Health" was also organized.
The session was chaired by Dr Sushma Khuraijam, Head, Department of Pathology, RIMS and Dr T Jeetenkumar Singh, Professor, Department of Medicine, RIMS.
The symposium featured insightful presentations and an engaging interactive session.
Expert speakers addressed a wide range of topics, including the health hazards of tobacco and nicotine products, manipulative strategies employed by the tobacco industry, and the pivotal role of dental and medical professionals in tobacco cessation strategies.
The celebration was also attended by Heads of Departments, faculty members, and staff of the Dental College, RIMS, Imphal.
