International Human Rights Day celebrated

As observed across the globe, International Human Rights Day was celebrated across the State today.
In commemoration of the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights under the theme, "Our Rights, Our Future, Right now", the Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) observed Human Rights Day, 2024 at Maram Union Secretariat, Old Monday Market, Senapati.
The programme commenced with a stilt stick walk led by the Young Troupe, from Tahamzam central traffic point to the Maram Union Secretariat where the program was held.
Speaking at the occasion, Neingulo Krome, Secretary General, Naga People's Movement for Human (NPMHR) in his speech stressed on the "Introduction to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its relevance to the Nagas".
Later an open discussion on "All humans are bom free and equal in dignity and rights: An audit on the right to self determination of the Nagas" was also held as part of the program.
The open discussion brought forth a number of concerns and issues of the Nagas.
The primary topic being the present ongoing peace talks between the Nagas and the Government of India contextualized against the Framework Agreement of August 2015, the failure to make any positive progress, and what this means in terms of peace for the region.
An overwhelming emergent point in the discussion was the focus on the need for respectful honourable negotiations between the Nagas and the GOI, and the need for Nagas to continue to advocate for their rights keeping in tune with this year's UN theme, "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now".
Several senior leaders, CSO leaders, activists and well wishers from all over Manipur attended the program.
Meanwhile, the United Meitei Pangal Committee (UMPC) celebrated the International Human Rights Day at Jame Masjid, Lilong Bazar under the theme "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now".
The event was attended by Alhaj MV Muheiyuddin, president of UMPC Manipur, Md Hashimuddin Meinam, advisor of UMPC, Legal advisor, advocate Zakir Hussain and Jame Masjid Lilong, Imam Alhaj Qauri Quyamuddin as presidium members.
Speaking at the occasion, general secretary of UMPC, Raees Ahmed Tampak raised deep concern on the Government's inability to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in the State.
He continued that the State and Central Government silence on the ongoing conflict in the State is a human right violation and urged the Government to bring a solution to end the conflict.
Alhaj MV Muheiyuddin, president of UMPC stated that the 19 month long crisis in the State has deeply impacted every community of the State.
The Government's failure to bring a solution to the crisis in the State is unfortunate and a violation of rights for every citizen of the State.
He continued that such awareness programmes are held to educate the people on human rights and urged the
people to not sell their rights for a meagre amount of Rs 500/1000 .
