Awareness program sheds light on issues of gender discrimination and gender based violence

A one-day awareness programme on gender discrimination and gender based violence was held today at DM College of Arts, Dhanamanjuri University Imphal today.
The program was jointly organised by the Family Welfare Department and Department Of Sociology, DM College of Arts and witnessed the attendance of T Ranjit, Principal, DM College of Arts; RK Tombisana, Head, Department of Sociology; Sujata Huidrom, SNO, Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PC-PNDT) and Ravi Sharma, Central Administrator of Women Helpline (181), Department of Social Welfare as the chief guest, president and guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, T Ranjit stressed on the importance of education as an agent to eliminate gender issues such as gender discrimination and gender based violence and to instill ways to tackle such issues among the youth.
Stating that not only women but men should also attend such awareness programmes on gender discrimination, he advised the attending students to learn valuable and educational information from the experts and resource persons.
Meanwhile RK Tombisana admitted that gender discrimination is deeply embedded in society and working towards its elimination is a difficult task.
Maintaining that the prevalent idea of gender discrimination leads to disequilibrium in society, she underscored the need to conduct more awareness programmes on gender discrimination and gender based violence both at the college level and beyond.
Despite the implementation of various Acts to uproot these social ills, society has not succeeded so far.
Thus, the Head of Sociology Department urged people to extend their support to eliminate these problems.
Additionally, Sujata Huidrom said that the PC-PNDT program exists to prevent selective abortion after determining the sex of the fetus and to stop the decline of India's sex ratio.
The PC-PNDT Act and Gender Based Violence & Medico Legal Care for Sur-vivors/Victims of Sexual Violence scheme also come under this program.
Saying that gender based violence has become a worldwide pandemic, the PC-PNDT SNO informed that one out of every three women are affected.
Gender based violence is a dangerous public health issue that violates human rights, she remarked.
Maintaining that no woman or child should tolerate violence inflicted upon them, Sujata Huidrom urged people to listen to victims of gender discrimination and violence and help them transform their lives.
