Water scarcity hits CCpur town

CCpur, April 25 2019: With tap water running dry for days, Churachandpur town is reeling under acute shortage of potable water which fortuitously has turned out to be a boon for private water tankers.

The main water source of the town, the Khuga dam zone, had ceased supply in the polling week as the department employees were detailed for polling.

The following week on April 15 cyclonic storm had snapped power lines at numerous locations and since then it hasn't been restored fully.

This has held the water supply as the department concerned could not run the pump house as they normally receive a maximum of 334 watts of power as against the required 370 to 400 watts of power.

While the water supply department has laid the blame on the lack of proper power supply, many private tankers who make a living by taking potable water to those in need are quietly capitalising on the shortage.

A random study conducted by local reporters today revealed that there are about 20 private tankers - trucks and DI pick-up trucks, engaged in supplying potable water to the town.

These tankers charge an average of Rs 300 for every thousand litres of water they deliver, and with the demands soaring they manage to take around 10 trips a day.

The demand will continue to be at peak until the power supplies are fully restored, but the tankers will not run out of business as the majority population in the town are still to reap the benefits of the plentiful water stock at Khuga Dam, which Imphal has been promising to deliver and earmark huge funds for the same but make little or no differences until now.
