Four killed in firing at Lilong

Imphal/Thoubal, January 02 2024: Four persons got killed and 14 others sustained injuries in a firing incident that took place at Lilong Chingjao last night at around 7 .

Following the incidents, the locals burnt four vehicles (Gypsy) which were brought by an armed group of people in camouflage attires.

The deceased have been identified as Md Sirajuddin Makak (55), Md Azad Khan alias Apikpa (35), Md Hussain Makakmayum (25) and Md Dawood Khan Phundreimayum (35) .

Reportedly, the group of armed people went to the residence of one Md Hassan of Lilong Chingjao and mounted pressure on his family to bring him out.

According to reports culled from the spot, one mason who stayed at Hassan's place succumbed to bullet injuries, following which the family shouted for help.

The armed people fled from the area by firing randomly after a large number of locals came out.

Four people got killed while 14 sustained injuries in the firing.

It is said about 10 seriously injured individuals are undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity.

One of them got his hand amputated.

The locals burnt the vehicles which the armed people brought.

Later it was found that there were bombs and bullets inside the vehicles after they started exploding.

Curfew was imposed in all the valley districts immediately.

Regarding the incident, a joint meeting of different civil society organisations (CSOs) was held at Lilong Chingjao, today and they resolved not to claim the bodies for the time being from JNIMS mortuary.

The meeting was chaired by Anjuman Ishalah-e Muashra Manipur president Moulana Kayamuddim and attended by KUCMA vice president Angomcha Mei-nou Epa, FOCS president Th Manihar, COCOMI president Jitendra Ningomba, UMPC advisor Islam Makakcha, Advocate Ravi Khan, Advocate Zakir, TAKDAL chairman Y Bhagyachandra and Forum for Restoration of Peace Manipur convenor Ashang Kasar, among others.

At the meeting, National general secretary of All India Tanzeem-e-Inshaf Md Islahuddin conveyed what the wife of Md Hassan told him after the incident.

He said that no monetary demand was served by any organisations to Hassan's family other than some people accusing them of selling drugs.

He said that Hassan' family is not associated with any kind of drug business.

The situation didn't go out of hand due to the joint efforts of the Chief Ministers, Ministers, MLAs, CSO leaders, social workers etc, Islahuddin said and appealed to the Government to award befitting punishments to all people involved in the firing incident.

The meeting resolved to form a "JAC against the mass killing and brutal act at Lilong Chingjao on 1st January 2024", seek consent form the Government to form Meetei Pangal Protection Force (MPPF), arrest the miscreants within 48 hours and hand over the case to NIA.

The Meitei Alliance, United Meitei-Pangal Committee, Manipur and All Assam Manipuri Muslim Students' Union have condemned the killing of the four persons.
