Manipur close in on Assam in gold count as state judokas dazzle

Manipur on Monday emerged as the team with the most medals in the 2nd North East Olympic Games 2022 as the state judo team dazzled on the fifth day of the Games by racking up four gold medals, coupled with one silver and one bronze.
The state athletes are closing in on leaders Assam in gold medal count.
They are well placed in the second spot of the medal table with 45 gold, 41 silver and 50 bronze.
In terms of medal count, Manipur have surpassed Assam but the latter are leading the medal table courtesy of their greater number of gold medals.
Assam stay atop the medal table with 49 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze.
It was yet another productive day for Manipur in judo as Th Maloti (-48kg), S Rashitombi (-57kg), Y Umakanta ( -55kg) and Waikhom Agashin (-66kg) all emerged as the top finishers in their respective categories to hand the state four gold medals.
In addition, Th Joyshree (-52kg) bagged silver medal and Chingkheinganba (-60kg) secured bronze in the day's competition.
Manipur hogged the medal tally in wushu competition as the state team wrapped up their campaign withll gold, four silver and one bronze medals.
They were just one medal short of sweeping the board in the competition by scooping 16 medals out of 17 on offer.
The state wrestlers on Monday produced encouraging results by winning two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
N Chaoba Devi shone in the women's 50k category.
She out-wrestled her closest challenger Nosezono of Nagaland to clinch the gold medal while Mizoram's Zenet Lalthakimi and Assam's Laimwin Daimary shared the third place.
Another state grappler N Bishworia did Manipur proud by claiming gold medal in the women's 59kg category.
She defeated Mizoram's Walza Hawmi in their final duel as both Meghalaya's Marysha and Nagaland's Vizosemo took bronze.
Manipur's Irfanlam Khan, on the other hand, faltered in the men's 57kg final to settle for silver medal.
Bongtang Phum of Nagaland won the event as E Chwamidro Phawa (Meghalaya) and Lalsiampuia (Mizoram) shared the third place.
Y James Singh (men's 61kg) and LC Linthoi (women's 53kg) added a bronze medal each to state's wrestling medal tally.
In the day's swimming competition, Manipur bagged one silver and two bronze medals.
Sarungbam Athouba Meitei (men's 50m freestyle) claimed the silver medal while Dekalu Th Panmei took both the two bronze medals after her performances in women's 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly events.
In badminton, H Malemnganba Singh wo n silver medal in the men's singles event.
He lost 18-21,19-21 to La Takum of Arunachal Pradesh in their summit clash.
After Monday's competition, Assam remain leaders in the medal table with 49 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze (123 in all), followed by Manipur (G45, S41, B50 - 136), Arunachal Pradesh (G31, S22, B23 - 76), Meghalaya IG20, S20, B49 - 89), Mizoram G9, S15, B31 - 55), Nagaland G9, S5, B27 - 41), Tripura G3, S8, B18 - 29) and Sikkim G0, S12, B19 - 31) .
