Minister hopes quality food, water curb health cost

While pointing out that most of the illnesses are caused due to consumption of unhealthy foods and water, CAF&PD and PHE minister L Susindro Meitei said that the government is working to reduce expenditure from the state's exchequer on health by providing quality food and tap water to the people.
In order to realise the objective, Susindro stressed on the importance of health department, PHED and CAF & PD to work together during his address on the occasion of World Diabetes Day observance held on Monday on the theme 'Education to protect tomorrow' and International Day of Older Persons on the theme 'Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World' at Khurai Sajor Leikai community hall.
The Observance function was organised by National Programme for Prevention & Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease & Stroke (NPCDCS) and District Health Society, Imphal East under the Susindro Foundation.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Susindro affirmed that as most of the diseases are caused by bad food and water, the PHED is trying its level best to provide potable water and CAF & PD to make available pulses at affordable rate in addition to the food grains being distributed by the department.
Stating that diabetes is related with lifestyle of the people, he cautioned that if people fail to take up preventive measures against diabetes, then everyone will suffer from the disease within 10 years.
He also urged the people to make the habit of doing exercise regularly, consume good food and avoid fast food as much as possible.
Minister Susindro urged the health department to set up a health centre at Heikru-makhong as it will benefit the people of the area even though there is JNIMS.
The programme presided over by Imphal East CMO Dr L Indira was also attended by Imphal East DC Khumanthem Diana as special guest, NPCDC, NHM SNO Dr Y Premchandra, Dr L Tilakeshwari and CMO Imphal East Neurologist Dr N Hemantakumar as guests of honour.
To mark the event, a walkathon from CMO Imphal East to Khurai Sajor Leikai was taken out, College of Nursing students performed street play, CMO Imphal East team displayed yoga performance and organised free health check-up.
Meanwhile, Leima Chanu Nawa Tengbang Lup along with Pharmaceutical Company Novamed, Lupin, Eris and Wockhardt jointly organised free diabetes screening camp to commemorate 'World Diabetes Day' at its office located at Singjamei Mathak Chongtham Leikai on Monday.
Blood sugar test, BP detection, HbA1c test were done and medicines for diabetes and hypertension were distributed during the camp.
