Audience for drama & theatre decreasing: Karam Shyam

Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam has remarked that as theatre and drama continue to lose its sheen with the changing times its audience are also dropping at a significant rate.
He made the statement while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of a 4-day 4th Rajarshi Bhagyachandra Drama Festival, which is being organised jointly by JN Manipur Dance Academy and Theatre Mirror, Imphal at the hall of the Academy, on Monday.
MLA Shyam said that drama and theatre used to be the mirror of the society but it is now losing its sheen.
As such, efforts must be made to identify the shortcomings and further promote the field, including holding discussions for the sake of future generations.
Manipuri king Rajarshi Bhagyachandra was a pioneer who took Manipur's art and culture to the next level, in addition to being a capable monarch who cared for the people.
Thus, we must inculcate his characteristics and work for the good of future generations, he conveyed.
The inaugural function was also attended by Festival director Wareppa Naba (Padmashree) as president and JN Manipur Dance Academy director P Bilash as guest of honour.
As part of the function, the dignitaries released a souvenir.
Later, Koriphaba Artistes Association presented its play, 'Fate of an Artiste'.
On the second day of the festival, Theatre Mirror and North Eastern Theatre Association (NETA), Heingang will present their respective plays, 'Ngamok' and 'Tamnalaini Nangdi Pendamisuni'; while on the third day, MYCO Imphal East will present 'Thajaba'.
Palem Panthou Cultural Trust will present its play, 'Ayapao' on the last day of the festival on November 17 .
