Imphal, November 14 2022:
Students under the aegis of Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) have expressed strong resentment over cutting down of several trees, which were more than three decades old, following an order issued by the university's engineering sector.
MUSU president Sanasam Steven told the media that they had no prior knowledge about the decision to cut down the trees and strongly condemned the act.
The action not only affects the ecological balance in the university campus but also disturbs the academic atmosphere of the students as they used to rest or study under the shade of those trees.
Demanding the university authority to give prior information to MUSU if conditions require cutting down of the trees growing inside the university campus in future, he warned of launching democratic forms of agitation if such activities continue.
Pooja Brahmacharimayum, a research scholar in Economics Department, said that she found the missing trees when she went to the library on Monday.
She felt disappointed on seeing it as she and other students often rest or study under the shade of the trees.
Continuing such acts without considering its impact will lead to deterioration of the eco-friendly nature of the university campus.
Such acts also make observance of World Environment Day meaningless, she said.
