THE 23RD North East Games 2008-09 has commenced today at Agartala, Tripura with 1102 sports-persons from eight states of North East participating.
The tournament was inaugurated by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar at Umakanta Mini Stadium this afternoon.
1,102 sportspersons will be competing for 129 gold medals in ten different events - Judo, Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Hockey, Boxing, Football and Weightlifting.
Altogether 181 sportspersons from Manipur is participating the big gaming event.
Hockey player RK Dhanajit participate the opening ceremony as flag bearer of Manipur contingent.
In today's match of men's football, Manipur beat Sikkim 5-0 in an easy-to-won match.
Bidyasagar, Malem-nganba, Naoton and Rolingson scored the five goals of Manipur Naoton scored two goals while the other two scored one each.
No players of Sikkim could scored a single goal against Manipur.
Manipur will fight Arunachal Pradesh in the next match.
In men's hockey match played today, Manipur beat Assam 3-1.P Adeva of Manipur scored two goals while Birjit of Manipur scored one goal amgainst Assam.
The only goal of Assam was scored by Manipuri player Th Ajit who played for Assam.
Manipur will fight Mizoram in the next match on February 5 next.
In individual event of swimming, Bangkim of Manipur bagged bronze medal in 200 m freestyle swimming.
In team events of swimming men's and women's team of Manipur won bronze in 4 x 100 m relay swimming.
The swimmers who got bronze medal in men's team event are Token, Mahesh, Pratapkumar and Bankim.
The women swimmers who bagged bronze in team event are Sandhyarani, Rani, Ashalata and Ambrabati.
