Imphal, February 04 2009:
Observing that agricultural land in Manipur is shrinking day by day despite the fact that majority of the people are peasants, Agriculture Minister N Loken has called upon the people to modify the traditional agriculture practices and adopt new methods.
The Minister was speaking as chief guest at the release function of "Pest Surveillance and Monitoring Review" produced by the Agriculture Department at Agriculture Office, Sanjenthong today.
He observed that population of the State is rising while agricultural land is shrinking day by day resulting in shortage of food grains.
Under such a situation, it is quite opportune and deserved appreciation for the Agriculture Department to introduce new technologies towards enabling extensive double cropping in a year, Loken noted.
He claimed that the magazine produced by the Department after conducting several experiments taking into account of the soil components and climate of the land would be of immense help towards enabling farmers raise their crop productivity.
He also appealed to farmers to follow the new methods of agricultural practices prescribed by experts of the Department.
The magazine release function was also attended by Agriculture Commissioner O Nabakishore and Director RK Nayansana as president and guest of honour respectively.
