23rd Anou Chess tourney kicks off

Imphal, June 10 2013:
The oldest cash prize chess tournament of the state, 23rd Kh Anou Singh Memorial Open Chess Tournament-2013 being organised by Kwakeithel Chess Club has begun from Sunday.
The inaugural function was graced by Dr P Nishikanta Singh, Retd.Prof.RIMS, President of Manipur Golf Association and Advisor of TRAU; Ch Shyamjai, President of Manipur Chess Association and S Rashi Singh, President of Kwakeithel Chess Club as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Altogether 66 players including 21 rated players and 2 girls are participating in the tournament, which would be played for 7 rounds under Swiss League System.
In the second round of the tournament, Apollosana, who had won this tournament 7 times (1.5pt) settled for a draw with Shankar (1.5pt) in 40 moves.
At the next table, another rated player Chkritombi (2pt) had a tough time to earn full point from his opponent, Goutam (1pt) in 54 moves.
Meanwhile, in the first round of the tournament played on Sunday, defending champions and top seed Jacky had to settle for a draw with tough opponent Somokanta.
Some of the players who got through the first round were Chakritombi; Bangkim; Premjit, Atembi; Shakespeare; Ningthem; Inao; Romeo; Ibouchou; Herojit; Rajesh; Bhogen, etc.
