Imphal, July 01 2015 : A student was killed while two persons sustained injuries when a youth targeted everyone on the way after his suicide attempt was foiled by locals.

The incident occurred today at Takhel village under Lamlai PS in Imphal East district.

Reports culled from the spot said that one Arambam Naobi (24) s/o (L) Ibomcha of Takhel Makha Leikai attempted to commit suicide by hanging at the house of his uncle Arambam Romeo around 9.30 am today.

After noticing the act of Naobi, relatives and some locals foiled the suicide attempt.

He was later taken to his house.

Moments later, he went on the rampage and started attacking anyone in his sight with a knife, the source said.

Khundrakpam Sanathoi alias Ibungo (23) s/o Shamungou of Takhel Mayai Leikai, who was whiling away his time reading a newspaper at the market shed of Takhel Panthoibi market was the first victim of the attacker.

He later attacked Yumkhaibam Premchandra (23) s/o Angoucha of Takhel Mayai Leikai, who was coming on a Honda Activa scooter and Pheiroijam Jugeshore (60) of Takhel Mamang Leikai successively.

Sanathoi succumbed to injuries at JNIMS hospital.

He bore two injury marks.

Sanathoi was a BA (5th semester) student of Biramangol College.

Premchand, who received injury at the left abdomen is undergoing treatment at JNIMS hospital while Jugeshore received injury on the left arm.

Naobi was overpowered by the public and was taken to the office of the local youth club.

Naobi also received injuries when the mob stormed the club office and thrashed him.

A team of Imphal East district police rushed to the spot to rescue Naobi.

The police team fired tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the mob.

Takhel residents said that the police even fired live bullets.

The police took Naobi after keeping the mob under control.

Naobi is also said to have undergone treatment at JNIMS hospital.

A case has been registered with Lamlai PS.

The body of Sanathoi has been deposited at JNIMS morgue.
