As part of the Nation-wide launch of 'Digital India' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, Manipur too witnessed the launch of the project at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) at Akampat today.
The programme comprises of various initiatives each targeted to prepare India for becoming a knowledge economy and for bringing good governance to citizens through synchronized and co-ordinated engagement of the Government.
The week-long event held in New Delhi will see at least one major e-governance project being unveiled every day and it is expected to attract 10,000 people.
In terms of scale and grandeur, the programme will match the biennial Vibrant Gujarat Summit that Narendra Modi started during his stint as the Chief Minister of the State.
Speaking at the observation function Director of NIELIT Imphal, Kolkata, Gangtok, Th Prameshwor said that the project is to empower citizens by bridging the digital divide which is there among the masses.
He said that the project would provide multi-sectorial benefit to the people as connectivity will be enhanced.
For the North East, he suggested that cloud computing, tower and fibre optics maintenance should be given more emphasis.
'Digital India' will provide various opportunities to students as Electronic Sector Design and Manufacturing would be launched soon and in five years of time NIELIT is set to produce 8000 students, he said.
