Ukhrul, July 01 2015 :
Driven by a deep motivation to promote peace and harmony in the district, the Diocesan Social Service Society (DSSS) Ukhrul called for active mass participation and collective coordination in peace building.
Addressing media persons during a press conference held at Viewland on Tuesday, Peace & Human Rights activist of DSSS Ukhrul TS Elvis said that the contemporary society has come to be replete with issues and conflicts of all sorts, adding that peace is not merely absence of war but it should coordinate with harmony in all aspects of the society.
Further highlighting various factors affecting peace in the society, he maintained that the prevalence of unbridled greed, desire for exclusive rights, dismal economic conditions and a dearth of true leadership inter alia has been fueling conflicts in some way or the other within the society.
Taking cognizance of the prevailing scenario, DSSS has been relentlessly making efforts to neutralize tension and conflicts in the district since its inception in 2012, Elvis informed adding that ever since, the society has been involved in restructuring relationship and understanding among the peoples at different levels of the community.
"Peace is a comprehensive concept and it takes a concerted effort from all concerned to make it a reality, " he said before calling upon all NGOs and other societies in the district to join hands in its continuing peace awareness campaign.
"Currently PASDO, NPMHR, CARE among others are coordinating with DSSS" .
He further sought cooperation from Church and community leaders in the campaign, saying that they are instrumental in bringing peace in the society.
Meanwhile, peace researcher AP Anthony disclosed that DSSS is steadily beginning to bring some of its vision to fruition, stating that in the wake of its Anti War Toy campaign across the district, there has been a remarkable decline in toy guns use among kids, apart from successful formation of Peace Clubs in several schools and colleges in Ukhrul town, including Sentinel College and Ukhrul Central School to bring about a peace trend within learning institutes.
